Yep, that's standard. That's the contract that was taped to my forehead when I was employed at a graphic design company. Anything I designed during work hours belonged to them, and I was not allowed to use it in my portfolio. 8D Awesome, eh? You should ask your boss if they can be included in your portfolio, because some companies allow at least that.

ARG:
That is indeed a standard. But what you do in your free time shouldn't be a concern. I once worked for a civilian company building Hummers for the US military. They paid me one ($1) US dollar in cash upon hiring and had me sign a contract stating that anything that I contribute as far as my ideas while on the job belonged to the company.
Needless to say I didn't give up any of my ideas.  ;D
