CAPTCHA as a form of SPAMMER control

(1/1)

David Henzler:
I have been enjoying the SMF FORUM software very much.  It seems to be fully featured, and offers many controls beyond my present need.  However I am plauged with a huge number of Russian Uk, and others who obviously don't speak the language, don't read what it's about and create 3-6 accounts per day.  I believe that many of these accounts are computer generated, and therefore something like CAPTCHA might be a nice addition to the software in the form of an update, or an add-in.

As I write I see that you have this feature already in place in this very input screen.  Perhaps you can apply it to the membership application, and I will gladly respond with a donation from our organization.

Regards

David Henzler

Colin:
CAPTCHA should be found on the registration page. If it isn't you can enable it here  Admin -> Configuration -> Security and Moderation -> Anti Spam

There are also several other antispam mods that may help if you are still having trouble.

MrPhil:
SMF already has CAPTCHA built in. You need to specify its "level". That said, it appears that bots are now solving CAPTCHAs more easily that mere humans, so don't count on it as a silver bullet. Read up on the discussions on this forum about using Questions and Answers (built into SMF version 2, a mod on version 1). There are also other mods which look up applicants against IP address and email address of known spammers.

Arantor:
Except that reCAPTCHA has proven to not be that effective at stopping spammers and as a sideline has also proven that it is great at deterring real users as well.
