Not sure how to handle Pictures
« on: May 08, 2012, 09:45:44 AM »
I am running a SMF 1.1.16 forum and up till now I have not let anyone up load pictures to posts.  I have just been making them link to a PhotoBucket type account.  However, the downside is the pictures go away when the PhotoBucket account is changed.  I would like to let members upload the photos to the forum so they stay forever.  What is the best way to do this?  I turned on the attachments but the size limit seems small but I don't know what to set it to.  I see on here it is (Restrictions: 36 per post, maximum total size 14000KB, maximum individual size 5096KB), that seems like a alot

What all settings do I need to adjust to get it working?

I also seem to remember that there was a security issue with attachments, has that been corrected?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Depends, really.

Do you have lots of space on the server?

For what it's worth, my forum's set to allow three images per post, Max attachment folder space: is 10240, Max attachment size per post: and Max size per attachment: are both set to 256 and the max height and width are set to 400.

I don't seem to get any hassles.

The security problem was fixed a long time ago, thankfully. :)

space should not be a problem (223MB of 10,000MB used)

It's surprising how quickly that space gets used-up, with image files.

I think it'll be a case of "Suck it and see", with this.

Try a few settings and see how you go.

After all, it's easy enough to change them, innit? :)

Yea, I would like to limit the attachment ability to a single board for an activity we have going in that board and let all other attachments stay as links to photo hosting sites.  However, I have not seen a setting that does it.

There isn't.

There may be a mod, for that, though.

Can't say that I've ever seen one. But, then, I've never looked for one, for this.

Have a gander at this lot:

Watch for if they're compatible with your SMF version, though, before you install any.
