Good for you! Go for it! You probably want to start with a few simple mods before you work your way up to the kind of major reworking you want of how posts relate to each other.

I got told NO by the team more times than I was told YES. The fork that has exactly what I want will get favored, and odds of my getting an exact match are the same as a snowball's in hell.

When the SMF team is asked to make a major change, they have to worry about the existing user base and what possible incompatibilities they'll introduce (not to mention, bugs). Users are strange -- many get upset with a major change in the way of doing things, even if you can justifiably argue that it's a better way. When you fork (whether starting one yourself, or joining up with someone who has the same road map as you), you don't have to be so concerned about compatibility and can go wild with changes.

or four? Maybe I shouldn't have ended mine... maybe EOS and Wedge will be the only two forks that do finish.

I am quite determined on mine, so maybe 3 then. That some will disappear just means it wasn't enough time - or passion. Or both. :)
