With just that, I'd say an add-on would suffice.  Memberships, amount of products, taxes, file size etc all come into play.

I don't see how membership would come into play as it would not be related to a forum. I don't want buyers to have to sign up for any type of membership to anything. Just purchase and then receive their download.

As for the amount of product. I would want something that would let us grow into a unlimited number of products. I currently have over 900 .pdf files I would like to list for sale.

Membership doesn't have to directly relate to forums.  Ecommerce platforms has memberships for things like resellers, advertisers, wholesalers, employees etc. which would give discounts or access to certain products.

You're probably fine with wordpress + addon or joomla + addon.
