how to write an sql query which will return the results of topics in last x days

i wanting to have a go writing a mod / report which is current like

http://t4djs.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=viewmembers [nofollow] [nofollow]

but i wanted to display the topic started in the last x days  but i have no idea what tables or how to achieve this i wonder if someone could point me in the right direction and possible post the sql code that would be required
