HELP: Need Portal

I have a RC2 SMF installed by itself on my host, I want to have a frontpage portal which allows users to log-in on the front and still be logged into the forum, I have never used portal systems, could someone please tell me how exactly I can install it, where to download it, and everything that I need to get started,
