SMF or Vanilla Open Source?

<< < (2/3) > >>

Arantor:
I personally find Vanilla very hard to use and navigate - frankly it's a mess.

The real competition for SMF? Currently that's MyBB in the free arena and any of the paid packages have a very loyal following - and all of them are strong candidates.

That said, I'm also going to mention that once SMF opened up its licence for 2.0 final, multiple projects appeared that took SMF and started rewriting it in their own way, one is Eos Alpha and one is Wedge, both have their own goals and approaches, and there are going to be cases where Wedge is better, cases where Eos Alpha is better and even cases where SMF is still going to be a better fit. But neither of these forks has (as far as I know) done a major release yet (Wedge certainly hasn't, given that one of its devs almost had a breakdown in recent weeks)

Spamming the support boards seems a bit much, though. So, I'll move this to the Spam board Chit Chat. ;)

How on earth do you know that?  I'm impressed  :D

CoreISP:
Lol @ Vanilla's hosting plans on their site. Talking about ripping people off in a major way :P

I don't really like the software. It looks... Poor.
Each to their own I guess, there is no "best".

I think K@ was joking. I have no vested interest in Vanilla Open Source.

I wasn't sure where to put this thread. I don't really mind where it is, as long as some people reply to it! :)

I really don't think it is this thread is "spamming", though. I want to find out about SMF. A good way to do that is to look at the competition. If I were concerned about which web browser to use, I would want to talk to people who know about web browsers and who have tried a few. They could provide some informed feedback. By doing so you could find out that Google Chrome Canary is more feature filled than Google Chrome, for instance, or discover Maxthon.

All businesses keep an eye on the competition.  It keeps them on their toes, and leads to improvements in products.

By the way, Vanilla Open Source and Vanilla are different. Vanilla Open Source is the free project.

Isn't the best way to learn about SMF to install it and give it a whirl? Yes, looking at the competition is certainly a good idea, but if the aim is to learn about SMF, I'm not sure looking at the competition is the best way to achieve such knowledge. Yeah? :)

Hey, I want to try out a Honda Civic, so I got into a Porsche Boxster! ;)
