What are all these core.xxxx files?
owrstrich:
At random intervals of several days SMF is creating a 42MB core.xxxxxx file in my root directory. What are they? Can I delete them?
N3RVE:
Any "binary executable" that crashes (PHP, MySQL, Apache, cron,...) can produce these "core" files. They are the entrails that a tech can examine to see what went wrong, and maybe give a clue about fixing something. If you get a lot of them, definitely involve your tech support. If you get one once in a Blue Moon, just delete it and forget about it (crashes just happen from time to time, and no need to get excited).
owrstrich:
I thought they might be core dumps. Just wanted to make sure before zapping them.
Thanks.

Should I be pleased that I was quoted in the referenced passage? :) Or irritated at not being given credit? :(
If there's a Wiki entry for this subject (since it comes up often enough), we should just point people to it. If there isn't a Wiki entry, one should be created. Is there an index anywhere of FAQs that we could just cut and paste links to the Wiki from?
