turning off all automatic email transmisions ?

If you mean e-mails about database failures, Admin>Server settings.

Uncheck "Send emails on MySQL connection error".

So... Either use FTP to make it read/write-enabled, or go to Admin>Packages>File permissions and set that to "Standard". :)

Browse Packages    Download Packages    Installed Packages         Options         

then we have > Installation Options but nothing to check on > but >
