As of right now I'm trying to learn PHP, but I'm still in the process of learning (heh) so here's a few requests that I recommend to improve SMF. :)

Member Group Manipulation:
When adding a member group, when asked for visibility, while choosing "Visible - Except in Group Key", the user group color should appear on the user, but it shouldn't be available in the "Legend"/"Group Key". Users should be able to join user groups that are labeled as "Free (User may leave and join group at will)" freely instead of being appointed to that user group by an Admin or Global Moderator.

Next to "Mark All Messages Read" would it be possible to implement a "View Forum Leaders" button that would link the user to a page that displays all of the Administrators, Global Moderators, etc. similar to vBulletin?

Restricting certain member groups from posting in certain boards, but make those boards view-able. Restricting certain members from posting and viewing certain boards. Allow some boards to be password protected so that members would need the password in order to get into that/those specific board(s).

Chat:
Is it possible to implement a better chatting system? I've added a few different portals to my site and had to remove them because the shout boxes normally die out somehow. I'm now running NChat and it works pretty good, but the only problem is there's no Sound/something to alert when a new message has been shouted. Maybe something similar to a Facebook Chat Mod would be better?

As of now, these are the only requests I have. I'd like to keep running SMF since it's the best free forum (in my opinion) compared to others. Anyways, I hope these features are implemented in the next SMF Version update. :)

smf is a forum so by default there will not a chat system added.

About the chat, that is something not all forums use so there's big chances that a chat won't e included as a default feature, also, not all servers can support a chat/shoutbox, free or shared hosting plans usually don't allow chats/shoutboxes due to resources limits.


About "forum leaders"  there is already some mods for that, you can even create your on page using SSI.


You can already restrict boards by membergroups by default and with a mod it is possible to allow those membergroups to "see"  but not enter those boards/topics

I am not certain what your first request is for...   you have jumbled a few different comments and it's not clear what you actually are asking for.
However, freely joinable membergroups are indeed freely joinable and do not require appointment. (see our support helper group here as an example)

there is a "staff page" mod...

You can make boards viewable but not postable by membergroup permission in the existing system.



and, as has already been said - it is unlikely in the extreme that there will ever be chat as part of the core forum

Old Fossil:
Regarding chat and portals.

The shoutbox on Simple Portal has a sound plug in which makes a sound each time a message is added.

The sound can be chosen from a list too.
