Tag User mod?

Wondering how difficult it would be to add a mod that allows people to "tag" users in a post, kind of like facebook.

When posting, the user could enter @username (or @"user name" if there is a space in the member's name) which would send a PM to the person being tagged.

PM would look something like this

Subject: You've been mentioned!

<tagger name> has mentioned you in their post!

How difficult would be to create something like this?

I want one in which u Tag a person by saying @username
and it sends them a pm

phpbb has one too, which is where I learned about it.

SMF Mention is decent, but it's not going to work for people that use tapatalk and the like
