HELP: Unauthorised members and spam threads
(1/1)
matilda79:
Hi,
I am the administrator of a SMF, hosted through host-ed.com.
Recently, and extremely bad today, I have been inundated with unauthorised members and they have started making unauthorised posts, which are just a load of nonsense words.
How can I stop this fromhappening, and is any data at risk / member's personal data?
Many thanks,
Mat

Hello matilda,
this is "simple" spam.
I assume you allow people to register at your forum, so spambots register accounts and post things...
Of course you should delete all these posts.
You can delete and/or ban the members that posted this non-sense too.
Here you can find some suggestions on how mitigate spam:

I hope this document could help you. :)
ETA: just out of curiosity, apparently you started your forum pretty recently, why did you chose to use SMF 1.1.16 instead of 2.0?
matilda79:
Thank you do much!
I've reset the permission to approval required and a verification code.
Fingers crossed.
I HAD to install the earlier version because I could not upload the latest version and get it to work. I posted on here, had 700+ people read my post but no one offered any help.
I appreciate yours though!
If there is a simple way for me to upgrade then I'd be really happy to have some assistance!

And don't expect me to upgrade my forum to v2, coz it ain't gonna happen! :)
