Changing Board to New Directoy and "New" Board?

(1/1)

CannedSoup:
Hello.

My site is soupsquad.com

I've been using SMF for nearly, if not, a year now. However, when I first started using it, I barely knew how to take care of it. So I plugged in a few mods and different themes. I stuck to one, major default theme. This, of course, is fairly limiting with theme selections, adding new up-to-date mods, new nicer mods, and just having the general "held by duct tape" feeling.

So, I decided to start fresh with a new forum in a new category on my site. Changing it from /forums/ to /social/

I've installed a new smf board on /social/ and am modifying the skin to fit our personal theme. I'll add plugins we've used, newer ones, needed ones. Or mods that may replace older ones.

For instance, I've used Aeva Media Gallery for file transfers (such as .fla files). This time I may just use the Download System (shame I can't seem to figure out how to disallow and allow certain file types, like I can with the Gallery).

Anyhow, I know that you can change domains and still keep your posts, statistics, members, etc. I read that you could. However, I'm unsure of how you would do the same with switching directories and with new installations of SMF and mods?

I rather be secure of an answer before smacking it with a stick. I know, because I may not use some mods, but use others, that a few of the bits of a the database will just be sitting there taking up space. Can that potentially cause a problem? The the Gallery's data not being used in favor of the Download System?

Will the two boards need separate database names before making the switch? Seems like it would. As you can see, I'm fairly new at this. Just trying not to muck it up. I can't seem to find a tutorial on this specific type of change.

CannedSoup:
So, am I able to get any sort of advice on this? I know it's not a normal kind of change, but it still is doable, I would assume.

Arantor:
Well, generally here people are requested not to bump for 24 hours - everyone here is a volunteer and people will reply if and when they know the answer.

The problem with what you're doing is that modifications modify both the files and database and there's really no clean way to magically switch one to the other. You can certainly disable mods and install new ones but the old data does usually hang around.

Especially given the types and natures of some of the changes that get made.

There's no tutorial because it's going to be unique to the specific changes on the site you're doing and generally requires a vast amount of effort to make everything work right.

My apologies.

I had that fear. Would there be a way I could, at the very least, keep the user accounts, posts, and boards? Maybe that's a section of the older database I can import into the new one?

Arantor:
Depends on your modifications. Some mods will even modify some of the basic tables you're referring to - Aeva modifies the members table, for example.
