I wonder why people would go to such trouble to create something so... well.. transient?
I realise that sand, by it's very nature, is transient. But, could they not use a medium that would be a bit longer-lasting?

That's part of the joy of it for them, that their medium has a unique property to it, that of being temporary. It adds a twist to how one uses the medium, to the constraints of creating art. It is an essential quality of the artform that it is fleeting.

That's beautiful! That would be more meditative than pen to paper, or paint to paper, or what ever. Also it doesn't harm the environment!
