Changing Theme and mods

(1/1)

cotty:
Hi all,

Well I have decided its time my site gets a new face lift. I have found a theme that I would like to use but my question to you all, will it be a simple matter of just installing the theme or will i loss all my mods on the new theme and have to re install them all again??

If thats the case, one of the mods on my site is the smf likes, if i re install that onto the new theme will all the previous likes be lost??

Thanks

cotty:
Anybody?? I have done some searching though have come up with mixed ideas.

What I really need to know is if I install a new theme, will I then have to re install all the mods I had for my previous theme, or will it automatically do that for me?

Shambles:
Hi cotty (sorry you've had to wait for a reply).

You're not in luck, I'm afraid to say, unless the mods you're talking about aren't theme-specific (or theme-related). You may just have to reinstall the mods, which will mean removing them first then reapplying them to include any new theme during the installation screens.

Here's a useful chat from way back (but the facts remain pertinent today, in SMF 2.0.2)

Thanks for your reply. I thought this may have been the case  :(

So what happens when I go to uninstall a mod and some of the uninstall says fail. Should I still go ahead and uninstall? Or what should I do in this case, as I have a feeling some of the mods will chuck this error at me.

You should tread slowly and carefully, that's what you should do  8)

Take one mod at a time and try to determine - from the mod parser system in the download area, or from the source files comprising the mod - whether any part of it ties in with your current theme(s); in other words, if the mod would normally present a list of themes to which it could optionally apply changes, that mod will have to be undone before it can be reapplied. If the package manager signals an error during its "trial run" of the uninstallation, back right out of it. Those kind of mods will have to be withdrawn manually imho.

This could be a good time to review your mods and determine if they're all absolutely necessary.
