Payment Required Before Posting, can This Be Done
designer2012:
Hi
I haven't installed SMF just yet, I would like to know if this is possible first.
I want the forum to be a paid members only forum, is this possible and how would it work? I would need someone to register and when they go to make their first post be prompted to make payment after this they can continue to post for the new 12 months after which they will not be allowed to post until they have paid again.
Please can someone advise if this is possible or outside the scope of SMF
Thanks

Well, it can be done, but not as elegantly as you want (though I'm not entirely convinced your scenario will be successful)
What you would do in SMF is disable normal posting facilities in the permissions area, but create a new membergroup which has that posting right. Then you'd assign things so users can subscribe through the paid subscriptions system, and on purchasing a subscription it would add a user to that new group, and thus they'd be able to buy the right to post.

Hi
Can I ask what you mean by "(though I'm not entirely convinced your scenario will be successful)"?
So if I disable normal posting and set up a membergroup called PaidMembers, after someone has registered where would they go to make payment?
Thanks

Sure. What I mean is that getting people to pay for posting, historically, has not worked out that well. Most sites can't make a decent fist of it and it ends up with the site closed, unprofitable and unloved. But it does generally depend on *exactly* what you're trying to do.

In their profile, under Paid Subscriptions.

Hi
Thanks for explaining that, I agree with you it may not take off, to cut a long story short I have a successful property rentals site and the inclusion of a forum is something that was requested to me, I did state it would be a paid members only forum and the feedback was good, so I have nothing to lose by giving it a shot, I do my own hosting so that's not as issue either. If it doesn't take off I'll just pull it.
So until they go to their Profile and make payment they wouldn't be able to post, is that correct?
Thanks
