You don't need a google account for Skype, you need a google account to be able to use the Play Market...
That's what Android nearly revolves around :X
If you really don't want to create one, you'll have to use a third party app store where you will have to sign up as well to download stuff or try to get the .apk's somewhere... Which is usually highly unsafe...

I've used Skype before, but don't know anything about Android. Don't have access to the tablet, so I'm trying to do this long distance. Gave my brother a link to the Android download on Skype website, and it forced him to create a Google account before he could d/l and install Skype. It now appears to have hijacked Skype, and redirects everything he does to Google Talk. Just trying to get him set up so he can make Skype connections with other family members, but don't want anyone else to have to register a Google account.
