Install and use a current SMF database?

My hoster (1and1) sent and email saying someone had uploaded malicious software into my FTP. The files that were affected were /forum/index.php and some random file in my main site's index (not the forum).  Since that happened I couldnt access my forum at all.  I got "access denied" every time.  I've some how reinstalled the forum software and pointed it to an existing database before.  So I decided to get on it.  I didnt delete the entire software for the forum since I have TONS of attachments and didnt want my users to lose them.  I did overwrite the files in the main directory for the forum with new installation files.  I went through the set up realizing it was setting up a NEW forum.  After that, I gave up.  I tried asking 1and1 to put a back up file in for me but of course I got one of our favorite half English speaking friends from another country who didnt help much.  Can anyone help me out?

If you already overrode your main SMF folder then your attachments are gone. (Unless of course you can work with your host on this) Did you touch the database yet?

I didnt upload the attachments folder to keep the current ones.  I dont think anything happened to my database.  Its still 35mb as it was before I tried this.

Colin:
Ok first step, download the attachments directory to your local machine as well as a backup of the database. Once you have done that let me know and we can proceed.
