Ant's Curve Variants
« on: June 19, 2011, 02:26:43 AM »
Link to the theme

This is going to be a catch all page for my 2.0 default theme variants. It's still WIP. No theme demos at the moment.

ETA: No further updates will be done to these until after 2.1 is stable.

I've finished updating the Prince of Darkness and Chocolate Curvaceous variants for 2.0 Final. These have numerous small CSS improvements over the 2.0 default, and also have had Superfish javascript menus added.

Full PSD's will be available for all customised images in the variants. For convenience, I've added a zip containing what PSD's are available for the 2.0 Final default theme. Unfortunately this is not a complete pack, but it does contain most of the useful ones. Thanks to Sinan for doing the stats_pie.psd, and to Bloc for doing the on_off_redirect.psd.

For anyone who would prefer to use Adobe Illustrator, ttteflon has made a copy of the main_block image in .ai format.

Terms of use are that all content from the theme download page, including PSD's, is free for use in any context on an SMF forum. I would like some credit if anyone asks where you got them, but if anyone chooses to be dishonest about it I'm not going to lose any sleep.

The theme zips will have an edited copyright (containing the theme name linked to my simplemachines.org email) but retaining the edited copyright is not necessary. Since the single variants do not have any template edits apart from the copyright, it is perfectly fine to just copy images and css to your default folder if you prefer to do that.

NOTE: If you wish to install my Dynamic Memberlist mod, it will not be necessary or desirable to install it on these variants. They will provided with all necessary index.css and rtl.css edits already included, as well as a custom image for the memberblocks and sorting buttons. Simply install the mod on the default theme and it will automatically work on these variants.

Sugested that too. Hey ho. I'd link you to the original discussion but it's not visible to most people (seekrit team board stuff that is more dangerous than wikileaks).

If anyone needs the default theme PSD's for 2.0 Final, they have been added to the download page.

Ok, after much stuffing around with CSS trivia and images, I've uploaded Chocolate Curvaceous. That means the theme and the PSD's for it. Being a fussy sort, I couldn't just do the minimum number of RC5>Final edits. I have to do things the hard way. :P

I've also reloaded Prince of Darkness. The first PSD zip for that one was missing the image for on/on2/off/redirect, so I've repacked them all. The theme itself has had further CSS and image tweaking for various elements.

I'll probably also whip up a tweaked css/js pack for Curve itself, with lots of little things the grumpy lead dev wouldn't let me pig around with for 2.0 Final. I'm sorta using these variants as a testbed for improvements in 2.1. ;)

Prince and Chocolate now come with Superfish jQuery menus as a standard feature. These have been tweaked for faster response as per this post.

The which? This is the latest zip for PoD, and the only one currently on the download page: http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?action=download;lemma=2428;id=14271

If you're using an earlier one it's up to you whether you install the new one. I'm constantly pigging around with tweaking these things. Like I said before, I'm playing with them as test beds for 2.1 (since they basically are the default theme) and keep getting ideas. The older ones still work just fine though. Suit yourself. :)

BTW, I've re-thought the multi theme idea a bit. Instead of packaging the three "colour variants" (PoD, CC and BS) together I'm going to do something a bit different. I'm going to keep them separate but add layout variants to each one to show an alternative use of the 2.0 variant system. These will be css-only variants done on default markup and should hopefully give people some more ideas about what is possible without hacking templates.

Oh and I haven't uploaded Blue Steel yet because I'm not happy with it. It's kinda cool and has potential, but it's never really rocked like the other two and I'm not quite sure what it needs. Will think of something when I have time.

Very nice theme you made, thanks for that..

I was wondering if you could help me with some edits?

I want the greeting message to display at right side, under where the smf logo is now.

I tried to mess around with the #upper_section and #top_section code in css, but a noob like me would not figure this one out lol.

Those errors look to be caused by one of your mods. I notice you appear to have a custom buttons mod and an icons mod (or are they part of the same one?)

Anyway the undefined index is something to do with the way the button titles are handled. Suggest talking to the mod author about it.

I love this theme and am currently using it on my site. (I replaced Crips "Raven" theme with this one) But I am having a problem, as with Crips "Raven" theme, on the registration page all the fields are a dark color except for the "Choose Password" fields. They are both white and the text is also white so a user can't tell if/when they're typing in those fields. Any way to fix this please?

Thanks 8)

Any updates on Blue Steel? I'd like to get oldiesmann.us up to date at some point... I'm not in a huge hurry as the site is pretty much dead at this point, but it's on 2.0 RC3, so it's kinda outdated :P

@Bozilla: I'll fix that and reload the zips, as well as giving the code for the changes.

@Oldies: been up to my eyeballs in crap for the last week so no, aint any updates at the moment. I should just churn the thing out and be done with it. Will try to get it sorted this weekend.

Sorry, I forgot about this. The backgrounds and the text colours are actually not white. I find the contrast ok on my monitor, but I can see how it may be problematic for some people. To change it, open index.css.

Find:

Code: [Select]
.invalid_input
{
background: #fff0f0;
}

Replace:

Code: [Select]
.invalid_input
{
background: #fff0f0;
}
#registration  .input_password, #registration  .input_password:focus
{
color: #000;
}

Of course, you could also change the valid_input and invalid_input background colours too.

I was replying to your post. In general, whenever you want support for any problem (basic software, mod, theme, whatever) it is a good idea to provide a link to a live example of the problem. It tends to make diagnosis much easer.

Screenshots don't give much information. It is a big help to see the code running live. That is why support people are always asking for a direct link to the problem. I explained that bfore.

Ok, you've got insane amounts of stuff stacked up, so the backdrop.png is running out of height. You'll have to make a taller image and change the css to suit. Either that or split it into two images (which still involves css changes, obviously).

I dont have insane amounts of anything stacked up anywhere on that site, so unless you can clarify that, I have no idea what your referring to. If your referring to the chatbox I have there, there is nothing insane about it, its one item and its put in a board descrip like that so guests cannot see it. There is nothing there that can be "split".

as for the css, 2.0 theme code has changed extensively versus prior theme code so I have no idea even where to begin even looking for where that image may be because on older themes, thats not an image, its simply a color you choose for that particular area. I pretty much had a feeling that there was an image involved in these two themes or that area would have just expanded to fit the chat box like all my other custom themes do.  Since theme code has changed so much, no idea where its even listed or what it was called.

If you want the easiest way of fixing it, with no screwing around with images required, do this:

Find:
Code: [Select]
table.table_list tbody.content tr.windowbg2, table.table_list tbody.content td.stats
{
background: #090909 url(../images/theme/backdrop.png) 0 0 repeat-x;
}

Replace:
Code: [Select]
table.table_list tbody.content tr.windowbg2, table.table_list tbody.content td.stats
{
background: #090909;
}

k that worked fine for the chocolate theme, but wouldnt work for the POD theme. In the preview it looked like it fixed it but as soon as I saved the changes, its still there. I will just have to play around with it I guess, or just get rid of that one.

Clear your browser cache.

thats done several times a day already on all my browsers and I already knew to try that but thanks. It seems to be slowly working itself out for everyone so I guess eventually it will make it to me. Not a big fan of that theme, so I wont even be using it. I will just monitor the complaints on it I get, for a week or so (and yes they were already instructed to do the same) and if it wont fully resolve itself for the ones that want to use it, I will just remove it and find them another one. Or just break down and make one myself as I used to do it all the time. I always made my own themes before but since I have a real life, and work 6 days a week now, its not a top priority.

Excellent Pack Ant!  Really appreciate the awesome themes.

Just 1 question, any idea how to enlarge only the main_menu objects, i realize making them larger is a multiple step process.  I've used photoshop to double the size of the menu_gfx.png images to 40px tall instead of 20px tall and that is the only change i made to that file.  But the text size is whats really giving me a bit of Trouble, i tried adding font: 2em; to #main_menu but it simply doesnt do anything =/.

I've done some generalized reading on the net on how to do this but im just missing something.  The actual theme im using is the Prince of Darkness theme.  I dont have a specific problem per-se as i've not managed to get anywhere at all other than making the adjustments to the menu_gfx.png file, all my tinkering attempts thus far have either had no effect or a completely wrong effect and have been reverted.

This is what sets the font-size. The last line of code just above the comment.

Code: [Select]
.dropmenu a span
{
display: block;
padding: 0 0 0 5px;
font-size: 0.9em;
}
/* the background's first level only */

Great Ant Thanks!  This does exactly what i wanted it to do, last question, i'd like only to main menu to have the enlarged text, is there a way to make the drop menus the regular size as well as the admin menus and their drop menus the same old size?  I'm going to start systematically adding font: 0.9em; to each element to see if i can figure it out on my own but thought i might ask just in case this is a bad idea =D

Thanks for all your awesome effort and help Antechinus!  you are an asset to SMF!

Yeah that's easy. Use this just to target the main menu.

Code: [Select]
.dropmenu a span
{
display: block;
padding: 0 0 0 5px;
font-size: 0.9em;
}
#main_menu .dropmenu a span
{
display: block;
padding: 0 0 0 5px;
font-size: 2em;
}
/* the background's first level only */

Then change this:
Code: [Select]
.dropmenu li li a span
{
display: block;
padding: 8px;
}

To this:
Code: [Select]
.dropmenu li li a span, #main_menu .dropmenu li li a span
{
display: block;
padding: 8px;
font-size: 0.9em;
}

That is exactly the way i wanted it.  Minus the 2em, i adjusted that, 40 px tall was a bit big, i opted for 1.4 with a 30px bg image.  Either way though you have been a wealth of help and i appreciate the shortcuts, saved me hours of endless fiddling and head scratching, although i can honestly say the fiddling has tought me significantly more than i thought it would.  Had a few moments there were i was pleasantly suprised with the results.

Well anyway, thanks again.  Cheers!  :D

Blue Steel will follow shortly, and I'll update this page then.. When all three are available I'll pack them into one multi theme, which is going to be called (wait for it) Ant's Curve Variants. I may add a couple of extra new ones too. ;D
Any update to the Status of Blue Steel? I'd love to see it happen :)
