Anybody know what this red "X" is supposed to be and how to fix this?

I'm pretty sure that would be the 'currently selected' star image...
so to fix it... give it a star image.. or dont worry about it...
maybe next release needs an if(empty) to display nothing if the image isnt filled in...

    I noticed that had happened to me as well. If you are going to assign that group, what I did was copy and paste the proper color star gif and gave the mouse a 'right click' right about where your cursor is and it appeared. The odd time when I went to save a group, the gif disappeared and that's all I did to have it re-appear and save the group with no further problems.  *Just a tip for SMF admins who have the red x after setting up a group.

   But, yeah..same deal as Tyris said; the groups that aren't assigned stars will have that red x without side effects.

Yes it is the star image, so once you write a valid URL for the star it will apear as an image.
