URL login switch?

henryjones1981:
I apologize if this has been covered already in a topic or a help FAQ. I spent a bit of time looking for an answer, but...no luck.

Here's a description of the situation and my problem:

1. I bought two URL's that link to the forum and the forum site itself from the original owner who set it up. I no longer have any contact with that party.

2. The URL's are a .ORG and a .NET; both are at GoDaddy and the current forum site is also currently hosted by Godaddy

3. Originally the scripts for the forum were written to/for the .ORG URL

4. Later the .NET URL was purchased and made the primary account at Godaddy; my understanding being the .ORG then being linked or pointed to the .NET URL.

5. If the .NET URL is used the guest is directed to the main page of the forum and the URL reads the .NET URL name

6. However, if the guest logins in with their member name and password AND/OR the guest clicks on any of the threads, boards, etc., then the URL changes to the .ORG URL and forum is then accessed.

7. What I'm trying to do is separate the two URLs. I need to change the name servers on the .ORG site to go to another hosting site other than GoDaddy so a new front page static website can be built. I did this yesterday not realizing the forum scripts were originally written for the .ORG URL.

8. What I'm trying to do is have the forum be the .NET URL. When I changed the .ORG URL's name servers yesterday, here's what happened. First, when typing in the .ORG URL it goes to the new name server's front page. This is what I wanted. When typing in the .NET URL it goes to the forum front page, which is also what I wanted. But, then my problem. If the member logins in with username and password AND/OR the guest clicks on any of the threads, boards, etc., then they are directed to the .ORG's new name server's front page. They are switched away from the forum which is not what I wanted.

9. I switched the name servers back to GoDaddy and everything is back to normal so the forum can be used, accessed, and logged in to by the members including me as Admin. I then accessed the server settings and changed the forum URL from the .ORG to the NET URL. Hoping this would be an easy fix that allowed me to do what I'm trying to do. However, this didn't work either as it broke the forum. Can't log out. etc. So I changed the forum URL back to the .ORG URL.

10. What I need to do is separate out the URL's so they are no longer connected or linked or pointed to each other or redirected or whatever it is. I need the forum to be the .NET URL and I need to take the .ORG URL somewhere else. This way when the .ORG URL is used it goes to a new website front page and when the .NET URL is used it goes to the forums front page AND when a member logs in AND/OR a guest clicks on a board or a topic the forum works as it should and they are not taken to the .ORG's new front page.

11. Again, I suspect the problem is the forum was originally written to the .ORG URL and what I need to do is switch these scripts(??) or somehow switch the forum to the .NET URL.

Any help on how I can do this is very appreciated.

All the best!

It sounds like there is a domain forwarding thing set up with GoDaddy which you can remove in their hosting control panel.  If you give me a minute, I'll log in and see exactly where it is.

Edit: Ah yes, it's in the detail for the domain that's doing the forwarding, for you that sounds like the .net.  It will say "Forwarding On" with "Manage" next to it where you can turn it off and at least have the two domains working independently of each other.

Thank you. I just called GoDaddy and here's what they said. There isn't a forwarding connection between these two URL's. How it's currently set up is that the .NET URL is the primary with a hosting plan. The .ORG is set up as an alias piggy backing onto the hosting plan and pointing to the .NET URL's hosting plan. What GoDaddy said is that I need to go to the Domain Management area and click on the 'X' in the 'Actions' box that deletes the .ORG URL from the hosting setup of GoDaddy. Again, they said that basically it is an alias right now pointing to the .NET hosting site. Once I break/delete the hosting connection they two URLs are now separated.

However, They said before I do this that I need to make sure there isn't a forum software problem since the forum software was originally done using the .ORG URL. Their concern is that I will break the forum if I sever this hosting connection without checking to be sure their isn't an issue with the forum scripts directing to the correct URL. They said typically from their understanding I would need to point the forum software from the .ORG URL to to the .NET URL AND THEN break the .ORG hosting connection.

So what I'm understanding is I need to go to the admin section of SMF and go to server settings and change the Forum URL name from the .ORG name to the .NET name AND THEN go to the GODaddy Domain Management and disconnect the .ORG URL from the hosting connection. Do you know if this is what I need to do?

Hopefully, I'm making some sort of sense and describing the situation adequately enough and what I want to do. Again, thank you for your response and help.

A link to the sites would really help at this point to clarify the situation.

hxxp:www.fortuneandglory.org [nonactive]

hxxp:www.fortuneandglory.net [nonactive]

They both point to the same forum. The .NET URL points to the forum main page and has .NET in the URL. However, if a board or thread or topic is clicked on the url changes to the .ORG URL.

Without going through the entire situation again  :o I just want to have the forum work on the .NET only and take the .ORG somewhere else for something different. Basically, to create a word press front end website. I already have the hosting name servers for this set up with MDD. I'll get the Word Press front end site completed and then migrate the forum from the .NET name hosted on GoDaddy to the MDD hosting. This way I'll have hxxp:www.fortuneandglory.org [nonactive] as the main front end site with hxxp:www.fortuneandglory.org/forum [nonactive] as the forum and end up at the end with the .NET URL simply being a redirect. But, for now I need to separate them out with the forum only on the .NET URL for now.
