beta tester?

What's that all about?
Is it something I can help with?

Beta testers have access to the code and also to the bug tracker to actually report bugs. Ideally such people are usually best able to help the project if they're able to investigate the details of bugs.

Thought maybe I could help test mods or something like that before they get approved.

You'd actually need to be on the SMF team to see modifications before approval. For people that want help testing mods, you could just ask them ;)
