I know you dont need a mod for it as ive done it before. Where can I enable a legend that shows the member groups (like simplemachines has) under the whos online list.

NO mod. Its somewhere in the settings, smf already has it.

Old Fossil:
There is a choice.

Either this mod which also includes all the membergroups and works well on 2.0.2

Show group key on board index: This is enabled via the theme settings.
