email for new topic or posts in a topic

(1/2) > >>

HAMBONE0:
I looked through some posts and there isnt anything specific here I wanted.  I want an email send out to all members for every new topic posted in my forum.  I am trying to drum up activity on my board and I think this is what I want.

Version Information:
Forum version: SMF 2.0.2 (more detailed)
 Current SMF version: SMF 2.0.2
 GD version: bundled (2.0.34 compatible)
 MySQL version: 5.0.77
 PHP: 5.2.10
 Server version: Apache

Can anyone help me out to see if this is possible.

Thank You

Kindred:
well, it is possible... but it will never be a feature.

Can you imagine the number of emails generated on a forum with 30,000 members that gets 3,000 posts per day?

Each individual user can already set their notification settings to receive notification on new messages per board or per topic.
BTW: allowing the admin to make those settings could have your site quickly flagged and blacklisted as a spam-site.

Finally, if you need activity in your forum, there are many ways to improve it, without resorting to spamming your users.   Specifically - get good content that interests people in conversation.

HAMBONE0:
lol, I did not think of the spam and flagging.  Good point.

Is there a code I can chage to modify in the DB each members setting for notify on per board post.

Thanks.

One thing to be aware of, with this...

If you have a lot of members, your host is gonna have a fit, when all those e-mails start flying around.

Depending on who your host is, it may even get your site shut down.

(Which us part of what Oldies said)

HAMBONE0:
after reading and and thinking, I agree, not a good idea, how ever I will just select the certain topics I want manaully and send a newsletter out for them versus every post.

Thank You!
