URL login switch?

Arantor:
Yes, I realise you didn't want to go over details again but there was a very specific reason I asked for the URLs, well, there's two actually.

Your posts are wonderfully detailed but I think there's perhaps too much detail, it's hard to pick out the relevant points directly, and with the links I can not only observe the situation but understand how you've configured the site and then I can advise you as to exactly what needs changing were.

In fact it sounds like from your last post that it's actually something slightly different to what you originally wanted to do...

What you will need to do is move the forum (including its database) to the hosting account where the .org is located (since according to your details that's going to be a separate account), and in so doing move the files into the forum/ folder. Once you've done that, you will need to use the repair_settings.php tool available from the Downloads area on this site to change all the paths and URLs.

MrPhil:
Yes, please clarify. For someone entering on the .net domain, what do you want them to see and experience? Likewise, what should they see and experience on the .org domain? Are these going to be two completely different sites, or should they point to the same content? Be aware that search engines will penalize you for having duplicate content under two different domains. What needs to be done with member bookmarks and search engine listings, if content is moving over from one domain to the other? 301 redirects for some period?

Sorry for the confusion. The lingo is tough for me as I am a newbie. There are also two different parts to what I want to do and unfortunately in the last post I went into the 2nd without the first being resolved thus confusing things further.

Where I'm at now:
1. I have fortuneandglory.net as the primary hosted URL on Godaddy. It has the hosting service connected to it.
2. I have fortuneandglory.org as the URL where the forum SMF scripts are written to. This URL is an alias to the hosting service .NET URL. It is piggy backed.
4. I want these two URLs separated without breaking the forum.
5. Currently, when the .org url is used the forum comes up, members can log in, guests can click on topics and threads, and the url remains .org the whole time.
6. When the .net url is used the forum comes up to the main page of the forum with fortuneandglory.net as the URL, however when a member logs in, or a guest clicks on a topic or thread, then the url automatically switches to the .org URL, i.e. fortuneandglory.org.
7. I inherited this.

What I'm trying to do Part I:
1. Separate these two URLs apart from each other.....FOR NOW.
2. I created an account at MDD hosting for the .ORG URL
3. I want to take the .ORG to MDD by changing the name servers of the .ORG URL and build a front end website on it.
4. I can't simply change the name servers on the .ORG URL right now though because I tried that and what happens is the forum breaks
5. I need the forum to remain on the GoDaddy hosting service under the .NET URL so members can continue to access it.
6. This way members can go to fortuneandglory.net and access the forum while I get a website built on the .ORG URL
7. When I tried changing the name servers on the .ORG URL that URL then pointed to the MDD space where the website is getting built.
8. BUT, when members went to fortuneandglory.net to access the forum, they couldn't. They could see the first page or main page of the forum but if they tried logging in or clicking on a topic or thread they were directed to the .ORG URL which was now pointing away from the forum to where the front end website is being built.
9. So I switched the .ORG name servers back so the forum would work and I'm back to where I started.

What I'm trying to do Part II
1. If and when I am able to separate these two URLs with the forum still working on the .NET URL and only the .NET URL, then I will be able to build a front end website on the .ORG URL.
2. AFTER the front end website is built on the .ORG URL I will import the forum from the .NET URL into the brand new .ORG website
3. I will then simply have the .NET URL be a redirect to the .ORG URL.

What can I do to make Part I happen now?
1. GoDaddy said I need to get the forum software scripts to point to the .NET URL instead of the .ORG URL.
2. And then after that, I need to break the .ORGs alias connection to the .NETs primary hosting package on Godaddy
3. And then, I can change the name servers on the .ORG URL
4. So how do I do that.
5. At this point I want the entire forum to simply run and work on the .net URL. That's it for now.
6. How do I do this? Do I simply go to server settings in the SMF admin areas and change the URL name from fortuneandglory.org TO fortuneandglory.net
7. And then, disconnect the alias hosting connection the .org url is pigging backing onto with the .net URL primary hosting service with GoDaddy.
8. And then, change the name servers for the .org URL to the new MDD hosting.
9. Is this what I need to do to separate the two URLs, without breaking the forum so that the forum works entirely on the .net url and the .org url is free and clear?

MrPhil:
I think you're making this FAR more complicated than it needs to be. If I understand you, your current setup is:

* GoDaddy hosting of fg.net
* fg.org is parked on (alias of) fg.net
* SMF installed on this shared setup, and configured to behave as fg.org no matter which you come in on
Now, where I understand that you want to end up...

* hosted on MDD (not GoDaddy)
* fg.org is still an alias for fg.net (Why do you want two domains pointing to the same forum? That hurts your SE rankings, and is just confusing to users)
* the site has a new front end of some sort
You're going to have disruptions anyway as you move your service from GoDaddy to MDD (I'm assuming they're two independent hosting services), so you might as well make as few moves as possible. When you make any changes to internal paths or to the domain name, are you sure to run "repair_settings.php" to harmonize and update all the internal settings? Have you looked at adding one of the "portal" mods to SMF, to give you a new front end? That way you would not have all this crazy switching back and forth. Do you really need to have both a .net and .org pointing to the same content? If this is just a historical accident, I would consolidate on fg.org, and do a 301 redirect on fg.net so eventually everyone on the forum is using fg.org, and fg.net is freed up for other purposes.

henryjones1981:
Ok. Thank you. I'll think about this some more and try to figure it out.
