login error message when using SMF login system for entire site

I'm running 1.1.16 and am using the SMF login system for my whole site. How can I get the login form to display a message when there is a login error?  Right now it just re-displays the login form.

Depending on what the error is, you should get a massage.

Do you, if you use the SMF default theme?
