I am a newbie and installing (or trying to at least) SMF.  I uploaded all the files to their proper folders (checked twice) and checked and fixed all the permissions listed in the Installation guide.  After running install.php and clicking on continue, this is what I get:

I have PHP v4.3.3 and MYSQL v 4.0.18-standard installed on my server.
I do not have YABB SE at all... (saw it on a recent post, but couldn't tell you what it is!)

The issue at hand is permissions; you need to have chmod'd files to 777, or it will give you errors like "Permission denied".

Also, are you sure this is the latest version of SMF? (Beta 5 Public..)  The line numbers don't seem to correspond to mine, and the new installer is MUCH BETTER about permissions and will even make files writable for you if you tell it your FTP information ;).

Actually I had v 4.1 I believe.. I just downed the new one... v5 and will try it..

Did you give it your proper FTP information...?  What path did you use?  You should have used:

/public_html
