Tony Reid:
NATO suing Newspaper over message board postings

I just read this in .Net magazine, and basically Lord Robertson (NATO secretary) is suing the herald newspaper for £200,000 + legal costs over false alegations by forum members on the subject of the Dunblane killings - one member suggesting that Robertson was the MP who helped get the killer a firearms license(although he wasnt and didnt).

There were also some other postings and false allegations.

Now I know that we all have disclaimers - and so did the herald(although together with the message board, now taken offline).

But I think as Forum Admins and Moderators, we need to go further than our disclaimers - and take a more proactive approach to removing postings that would be considered liable or of malice.

I know its more work for us, and its easy to let things slip, and feel safe behind a disclaimer, but if this case was  successfull - it would set a precedent here in the UK, and could become quite a nightmare for forum admins.

Its not reported on the www.theherald.co.uk website.

But thought you guys might be interested.

PS. I am going to be speaking to my solicitor(lawyer) a little later, so will mention it to her and see what she says.

Yes, because we all know the UN were created for, pff peace ::)

Allmost all of the disclaimers will not hold up in court, that's old news, so what. There's also something like freedom of speech.

Joshua Dickerson:
Then, in the states, we would have laws about defamation of character and slander. It sucks that he got the UN to sue. He should sue on his own

*has not read the article*

Shoeb Omar:
Meh bleh, shadow - your comment was uncalled for.

groundup, NATO is suing under Lord PompousDude, not the UN.  And I agree with Tim on his sarcastic reply ;).
