Customizing SMF > Graphics and Templates

Copy a template from the theme this is based on.

In SMF 2.0.2 , can someone please explain what this does, and how to use it please.  In a idiots guide kind of way.   

The docs are a bit sparse where this is concerned.  ( a bit like my brain cells).  :D

When SMF needs a template or language file which is not in the current theme, it looks in the theme on which it is based or the default theme.
Unless you need to modify a template, it is better not to copy it.
