adding 2 custom fields to profile

i was wondering how hard it would be to add 2 custom fields to users profiles, i tried a method a while ago to add some custom fields but it didn't work,

basically id like to add 2 additional fields to the profile or replace any of these (ICQ, AIM, MSN, YIM)  as its a gaming site so those are not needed but xfire and steam fields would be more suitable, it doesn't need to sync with steam or xfire to show on-line friends etc just purely show each users steam name or xfire name in there profile to make it easier to add new members.

i've tried the mods available but none of them are suitable with smf 1.1.16

any help would be appreciated  ;)
