I know the bug is there, but I never looked into it...now I'm fixing other (really broken, by me of course! :P) things, later...

I don't think it's a bug, per se, because it's not 'broken'. It is working exactly as designed.
I did once write a mod that logged errors into who's online and made them available to the admin, so whether it was a fatal error, or expected the user to log in or whatever, it would explain this.

A page on whois would be an excellent idea. And that would be the place for explaining the meaning of the inscrutable messages.
