Skype in Android
CoreISP:
Again, you don't need to have a google account to use Skype, you need to have a google account to be able to use the Play Store in Android which you use to install Skype or any other app.
The Skype website most likely links back to the Play Store... That's where the apps are stored.
I don't understand what the problem is with something as simple to create a google account, it even offers you to do that when you open the Play Store or follow the download link for Skype...
Speaking of overcomplicating matters for a nonsense reason :X

Guess I didn't explain it very well. I'm trying to set up my family to video chat. Have tried several browser based options that didn't work very well, and am back to Skype, which a couple of us have used before. Was trying to avoid it, because it's a bit complicated for those of us at the low end of the tech curve, but it works. My brother, who lives in a different part of the state, recently bought a Galaxy tab which runs Android, and which I don't have access to. He downloaded Skype from a link on their website, and now everything he does is from Google Chat, not Skype. It would simplify matters if everyone were on the same page, and he apparently is not.

You might possibly be aware that Google is a dataminer - it's their business, ripping off peoples' personal information, packaging it in creative ways, and peddling it to gullible advertisers. Some folks are not bothered by this, and that's good ....... for Google. They like it when you're docile. My system is well protected against intrusions, but I do not recommend to family members (or clients) use of any products/services offerred by such parasites.
Jeff Lewis:
Get him to download Skype from here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.skype.raider - that will launch Skype on his tablet and you don't need a Google account for Skype itself, just for the market. If you don't want to get a Google account to use the market try a search for "Skype apk".
With you getting your family to avoid Google, I'm surprised they have an Android tablet!
CoreISP:
I would personally not recommend using a APK from a insecure source.
But it is a alternative indeed... Just scan it for trojans first :D

Yeah, that. If you really think Google is the evil force on the internet, why buy a Android powered device? :P
Krash.:
Thanks, Jeff, that looks like what we need.
My brother bought the Galaxy on his own, I would not have recommended it (he didn't ask). But his other choice was an iPad, which isn't much better.
