user questions...
Kindred:
yeah, this is getting off topic and will hopefully be split into chit-chat or some other location...
Frizzle,
no... actually, I stand with Arantor on this (shock, awe) and have gotten pissy at users more than once about the same thing.
It is not a "holier than thou" attitude, nor is it any sort of desire to have folks "kiss my behind". It is simply put, annoyance at the continual laziness of users. Some users even preface their question with "I couldn't be bothered to search through 200 (or even 20) pages of the existing topic. Can someone please tell me the answer to something that has probably already been answered more than once?"
THAT attitude is what leads to our eventual disgruntlement and continual annoyance with users.
The other attitude, which is often part and parcel, is the feeling of "entitlement" that some users come across with. They *DEMAND* an answer or a fix or something to make it do what they want. They don't request or ask.... they demand, insistent that they are owed something by the folks who created a piece of software or mod.
normally, the support folks and developers are pleased to see a bug report (not at the existence of the bug, but at the report) so they can FIX it and thus make the software better. However, many times the report is "this piece of junk doesn't do what I want it to do. fix it for me, NOW". Sorry... no.
There is a search function. Although there may be some issues with the results sometimes, they are usually pretty decent.
There is a Wiki/doc site with the answers to 90% of the most common questions.
When I am a new user on a site or with a software, I try to FIND the answer before ASKING. If the answer is missing, unclear or not specifically related, then I ask (usually referencing the existing partial answer, if it exists). This helps ME as the person with the question and it helps the SITE because their existing answers were incomplete.
Now, I know that I am in the minority for doing that... but is it so hard for someone to LOOK around first and to ASK instead of DEMAND?
I have indeed answered users with "RTFM"
Many times, I answer with just a link (usually to the wiki page which answers the question)
some times, I re-quote the answer from earlier in the thread.
but each user only gets a few "freebies" before they are expected to start doing the search themselves.
K@:
* K@ looks for an obvious place to split the topic...
... and fails.
Kindred:
I picked the spot where we started getting way off topic for the AEVA support thread. :P
