Is there a mod or a trick where you would have button above the categories, and boards that lead you to another set of categories and boards. I know there's the multiform mod, but that's not what I'm looking for, I'm looking for a way to make divide some parts of the forum into other pages.

There isn't a mod for it as far as I know, and doing it is not simple, because it's quite a complicated change to the structure of how SMF handles categories and boards on the board index.

It probably works!

Try installing it, there's an emulate version thing on the bottom right of the package manager, emulate the version at 2.0 RC1.2.
