Our Admin is AWOL
(1/1)
ccheryld:
i was given permission by our forum Admin to moderate a very small hobby forum which is in bad need of updating.
new members can't get in,spam bots are having a heyday.
several members have emailed the Admin of the forum to offer help, but he has ignored our emails for almost a year now. I have the feeling that his interest in the hobby has been abandoned along with the forum.
There is a wealth of photos and info in the archives dating back a few years and they are referred to all the time. All fresh posting will be buried under the spam in a few months and the forum will be dead.
Is there any way any the SUPPORT STAFF here can get in contact with the forum owner through this site to get a reply or to update the forum...or even transfer the forum over to a new Admin or allow more moderators to help out????
Colin:
I am afraid not. The only thing you can do is attempt to get in contact with the current admin if you don't have admin access or database access. Best of luck.

You could set up a new forum on your own host with a similar name and post a redirect topic to there for members to go and register. Then any of the topics ect you need from your archive you could copy to the new forum by reposting them.
I know its a lot of hassle but if the admin has vanished and the spammers are overtaking the forum you dont have a lot to loose if its going down anyway. Just get a few mods to help do it per section or by dates maybe.
What happens when his hosting runs out ? The forum could vanish at any moment anyway and you loose the lot.
MrPhil:
Who's paying for the site? If the site was on the AWOL Admin's credit card, it will presumably disappear soon. If someone else is actually the owner, the hosting service should be able to restore access to them (change passwords, etc.). Then you can set up a new Admin, clean up the forum, upgrade to SMF 2.0.2, install anti-spam mods, and get back in business.
