Are mods safe?

(1/3) > >>

repxl:
Hey all im going to add a new member to my forum he,s telling he is good in smf so i go make him my smf deverloper.

i have said to him the theme will stay default and only mods can be installed.
so are mods safe ? can,t he destroy anything ? also how to make a backup of my posts etc
when someting is going wrong that i have allways my topics,  posts safe in my pc.

cuz i readed that some mods doing too modifications to database.

Masterd:
All mods on the Mod Site are safe, but there's no telling what that person can do. Simply don't give Administrator permissions to anyone you don't trust completely.

Arantor:
If someone can add mods, they can add code that modifies literally anything on the forum.

Including code that automatically makes them an administrator without any signs to show that they are an administrator.

butchs:
You gave me an idea... O:)   A mod to check if the SMF code was altered.  Too bad I am now working my real job and do not have enough time for such a programming adventure.

Arantor:
Interesting idea, except that there are legitimate mods that have modified such things in the past, I know I once rewrote how board access was arranged (which would assuredly be the sort of thing you'd be checking!)

By the way, the example I gave wasn't hypothetical. That actually happened and the person who did so was in fact banned from this very site (multiple times).
