Using login from outside database

Is it possible to use the login and password information from a different mySQL database sitting on the same machine as my YaBBSE or SMF install for login to YaBBSE or SMF ?
I have a portal already in place and the users are complaining that they have to login to the portal then login to the BB. So I need to combine them.

As a second option, I'm sure it has been covered but how do I use YaBBSE's or SMF  login scheme for a larger portal of which YaBBSE  or SMF is a part?

Any suggestions or pointers to exisiting threads/answers greatly appreciated.

...oops just saw some other posts saying this board is only for SMF support which isn't out yet but... well, I'm confused but will repost in YaBBSE support forum.

It would probably be easier to integrate SMF into your portal, actually...

Dare I ask when SMF will be available?  :P I have two or three projects that I am either using or pushing others to incorporate YaBBSE/SMF into and would love to just start with the much better SMF than having to upgrade later.
