Adjusting table alignment in index.template.php

I am trying to fit in the forum to an existing design and would like left align the table in the classic design. 
It works well for the top frame but the main table below gets placed to the right of the top frame when I change 'align' in index.template.php from center to left.  Any ideas how I can get the tables to remain underneath each other?

I am completely new to PHP and it's basically trial and error for me.  Ideally I would like to add a cell with a menu to the left of the forum (such as the site does).  If you of you have some info on this, I would greatly appreciate that as well.
