Before I go though updating all files want to make sure this is ok or if you have a suggestion/improvement

I think that should be fine. Do share your test site, if there is one, here. Currently, I can't see any working test site yet.

According to the license terms, as long as you include the original copyright line, you can change everything else.

What about the SMF credits at the bottom of the page ?  I would assume that they must be included, isn't that so ?  There are 3 hyperlinks in the SMF credits, must all 3 be included ?  Curious, since the only items listed above are merely comments in code, no one will see them other than the fork developers.

Copyright lines on the bottom pages can be removed according to the license. But you can't remove the developer copyright/license comments.

You can remove all comments in the code, except for the license and copyright information.

I tried once to remove them to put a text of my own (the same links, with different anchor texts). An awful warning message appeared. I just wanted to hide the SMF version used, because I heard it can be searched by hackers and nasty bots.
=> Why did the warning message appear if it's allowed to remove the Copyright lines on the bottom pages ?

That was for the older versions of SMF before 2.0 final. Now it is ok to remove the copyright link in the footer.

however, I will point out that
1- we have always allowed the smf version number to be hidden or changed - we've even given instructions on how to do so.
2- hiding the version does not protect you from anything.
