How to preview without being seen by the wwweb?

(1/2) > >>

NotATechie:
Hi!  I'm very new to smf, have a hosting service, and have successfully installed smf twice---and then removed it.  I have removed it because as soon as I install it, it is immediately available for everyone on the web to see.  I'm wanting to be able to do "construction" to the site without everyone in the world able to see it's very ugly early stages.  Is there some way to make it so that the smf forum is not visible to anyone but me while I am perfecting it?

(Very noobie question, I imagine.  Sorry!)

Arantor:
There's two routes.

1. You can put it in maintenance mode. Everyone can see the forum theme etc. but no-one but admins can log in and actually see the forum. Probably not what you're after.

2. Set it up offline on your own computer and then migrate it to the real server. This is what I do, using WampServer.

Of those two options, certainly #2 will prevent "everyone" from seeing your site. But I've never seen your site, and I consider myself in the category of everyone. So, maybe #1 might work for you. Is your domain popular enough that "everyone" will see your forum as soon as you install SMF? Welcome to SMF, too! :)

"Everyone" is actually no one, meaning I can't imagine very many people "running into" the site   But I hate to have the chance of it, oh silly perfectionist that I am.  If, when, people start hearing its name, I want them to be able to run right over there immediately, to see what all it's about.

I'll check out wampserver.  Maybe it's something a non-techie can use...

Colin:
If you don't have a large audience already drawn to your site I would go with #1. It will be much, much less work for you.
