how to improve database performance

Hi

I use SMF 1.1.16

and my main problem is the database dimension.

I have ckecked during these days and some tables inside the database are very huge and some increase very fast.

first of all
smf_pretty_url_cache
this table increase about 10MB per day,
and you can clear from admin panel, pretty url, maintenance

smf_messages
this table I think is about newsletter that I send to my users
I have 18.500 and I have sent about 4-5 newsletters in las 3 years, and the table is 20MB
if it is really contain only the newsletters sent, I can clear it without problems.
please let me known if it is about newsletters or maybe something else

smf_sessions
someone says that I can clear this table without any problem,
someone says that it's better not to clear it or your users will be logged out,
but maybe I can clear only OLD sessions, I don't known how to do it but I can try.

I think these are the 3 tables that can be cleared without any problem,

if someone can tell me exaclty if the tables descriptio are right....
..I can prepare a cron execution to clear these tables automatically
pretty url cache every 24 hours
messages every 1 month
sessions every 12 months

so the database can go very fast.

but I have to be sure before make a disaster...

Funny, I don't have a problem with that table on my installations, but mostly because I'm using SMF 2.0 where it can use the caching system instead of using the tables.

You're headed for a disaster anyway by doing half-assed changes that really won't benefit you nearly as much as you think.

what happen if I click "Use caching instead of database table for PrettyUrls"  into settings?

it will not to full the cache into database???

Considering that 1.1.x's cache system is much more limited than 2.0's, I don't believe it'd do anything useful.
