PMs for Support
« on: July 30, 2012, 05:49:07 PM »
Yes, this is one of my famous little rants.

I want to explain why I don't want PMs for support. Even though I've put in my signature that you shouldn't PM me for support unless you're going to pay me for my time, I still get PMs. I know the SMF team has similar trouble with this, so I thought I'd take a little time to explain why this is inappropriate and rude and should be avoided unless specifically asked for.

We're volunteers. We do this in our spare time. Most of us do not have much spare time, and when we do, we offer it up to people who need help. We choose who we answer, who we have the knowledge to help, who we have the time to properly solve their problem.

And in public, everyone benefits. Future users who encounter the same problem will find the posts when they're public, so if you get helped in a public topic, it isn't just you that benefits, it's everyone in the same position as you.

Such generosity is rare, even in a volunteer community. Now, if you send us a PM, there's quite a few things different:
1. It stops being about whether we choose to use our time to help you. Bear in mind we're doing this in our spare time (or some of us, doing this instead of earning money, so think about that, you might actually be costing us money to help you), you're expecting us to put aside our choice for yours.

2. It only helps you. It's selfish, because the same advice may well help others but you're expecting us to help you and only you.

3. It's impatient, because it doesn't allow us to go away and think about the problem and respond when it is convenient for us (given that it is being done in our time), instead it's expecting an answer sooner rather than later, and it also doesn't allow other people who are knowledgeable to add their opinions and experience.

That's why I now say that if you want support, either post it publicly, or if you want me to do it privately, we agree on a price for you to pay at the end of it. If I choose to use my time to help everyone, that's my choice. But if you want me to put you above everyone else, give me a reason to do so, and that reason won't be 'because I want it'.

I don't know exactly how others feel, but given the number of people who post in their signatures about not sending them PMs for support, I'm fairly certain there are a lot of people who are very fed up with this. I'm posting this here to let you know why it's irritating, and as a request to generally stop it if at all possible.

Thanks for reading, and to those of who don't go out and PM people because you're impatient, we appreciate it. To those of you who provoked this article, please think very carefully before sending us PMs. It is not for nothing that there is that fairly big notice in the send-PM area.

I want to add for future readers, when people pm a topic link "can you please look at this" i ignore it more and more. Impatience is not a thing i can tolerate.

People needs to realize, from their side there is only 1 problem needs to be solved but from our side there are a lot of problems needs to be solved.

I don't accept support PMs. Ever! Your query will be answered much quicker in the public boards. Why don't I want any PMs asking for support?

It should also be in the big, red warning to send a PM.

Sticky worthy, but maybe not in this board. It's a universal topic, too. How about the only news item in the queue until 2.1 comes out!?! :)

If people aren't reading the big red notice, or turned it off, it doesn't make a lot of difference either way ;)

Sticky in this board? Nah, nor in any other board - people don't read the stickies in there either.

It's almost the sort of thing you need a global announcement system for ;)

I get so may PM's here regarding support that I no longer respond to any unsolicited PM's unless they are from SMF staff, well known respected members or someone looking to pay for services.

Btw, nice rant Arantor.  ;)

How to start an argument online:
1. State your opinion.
2. Wait.

{Where is that Like button when you need it :D}

Arantor raises 3 valid points and I totally agree with all of them as well.  I relate to some of the things that were brought up in this thread. I remember when I first registered here and I was browsing the forums answering many support questions trying to give back to Smf by helping around here as best as I could, but soon I got a lot of unwanted private messages from those users that were having issues with their forums.

It became so bad that I did not dare to post anymore for fear of being spammed in private. It annoyed me very much because those users were being very selfish in wanting others to drop everything that they were doing only to help them. And in a lot of cases they did not even bother to say a simple Thank You but were getting more and more demanding as if that help was owed to them or something.

Another thing that I have noticed is that a lot of support topics are about the most simplest of things that should not be asked at all. Because their answers can be found very easily with a little search and efforts but it looks like no one bothers to search but want others to do their work for them. And that is not right, especially here where everyone providing support is a volunteer be in the staff or in the community.

huh? What?

You expect users to put in some effort and not demand to have everything handed to them on a silver platter, wrapped and tied with a bow?  How dare you suggest such a thing?

Four little letters, folks...

Yes. Yes I do expect users to put in some effort. If they want something, they should put some effort in as well.

You know me, I don't tolerate fools gladly, nor do I suffer idiots who want the world for nothing. I don't have a problem with people who don't know PHP or similar but if people don't want to put *something* in themselves, I don't see why I should help them.
