Example needed required field

The Wizard:
Hello:

I'm using smf 2.0.2 and want to create a required field on the registration page. I'm hoping that someone can post the a example of how create a required text field in php. I find it easier to see a example of how something looks in php. I can then break in down and understand how it works.
