"core" files in my forum directory

(1/1)

Seirie:
I recently switched from YaBB to SMF and when I uploaded the new stuff and ran the upgrade document I was looking through my directories with FTP and noticed I have about 20 "core" files. They are named such things like "core.1008" and "core.927".

The reason I am posting this because these core files that appeared are HUGE files and I need to know if this was supposed to happen, and if I am able to remove these files. Thanks

Grudge:
SMF doesn't add any files called core. I have no idea what they are but it shouldn't be SMF related... unless you have some weird database thing going on. Why not rename them to something like bk.core.1008 etc and check everything still works...

Christian Land:
i think those are core-dumps.... depending on the way an executable crashes under linux, it leaves behind a core-dump.... those files could get quite large and can be used by the developer of the executable to find bugs that caused those core-dumps.... normally, they can be deleted without doing harm.... BUT if there are core-files, something goes VERY wrong ;D

emrys:
If it was me i would contact my hosting provider and ask their support staff about it before i messed with them
