 I'm just wondering if anyone has a mod to add a smiley grid (like on boards such as invision etc) at the side of the posting box, rather than above. This is because I like to have many smilies, and once I add them, they take up rather a lot of space.

Did you already try to modify "Post.template.php" ? Copy the file from the "default" theme into your customized theme directory and modify there. I do not expect a problem when moving the smiley BBC tags from top to the side of the text entry box. Just change the form table layout in your desired way.
