Package install error

I have installed a couple of packages installed with no issue. I installed Ajax Shoutbox and had an issue so uninstalled.  Installed SMF Shout box, could not get it to work and cannot uninstall I get an error but it is not function (said cannot find uninstall) Reinstalled newer version of Ajax and all is well.  Decided to remove SMF Gallery and try Aeva.  Uninstalled SMF Gallery and now i can no longer uninstall or install any packages.  I get the error

"You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!"

I have added a temp file. all my permissions are set to 755 in package folder (except the individual .zip file for the various packages which are at 777)

I have logged off and on

I have parsed Aeva and changed permissions on all referenced files.

Not sure what to do now.  Any help aprreciated

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this.  As this is a new site i may just have to scrap it and start over but I would like to be able to fix it.

Try changing all the relevant directories to 755, coz some hosts don't allow 777.

If that doesn't work, try with 770 or, even, 644.

I would look at your server errors logs too. That might help track down which permissions need to be adjusted to make it work.
