For a while now I've been using Centos on and off so I'm not completely new to linux. The problem I guess I have is that I can not find a desktop environment that I like. Unity and Gnome 3 make me want to go what in the world were they thinking when they created them. I like gnome 2, but its no longer supported by gnome. KDE and Xfce are kinda okay, but they just don't seem to work all that great for me. Anyone here have suggestions on a desktop environment  that in a way is like gnome 2?

I would be interested to hear others peoples thoughts about a good feeling desktop environment.  Been pondering switching my main development environment to it (as I can't get any more OS X upgrades out of this old thing).  I really dislike the new Unity that now comes with Ubuntu, so I won't be using it and have been meaning to start testing some others to find one I liked.  Wanted to stay in the Debian line though.

I'm really loving KDE4. The first few releases were kinda rocky, but it's gotten very smooth. It shouldn't be too difficult to emulate the GNOME2 two-bar look if you miss that part. Heck, there's even a component that emulates the OS X Dock that you can install.

If you really insist on GNOME2, there's the MATE project, which is keeping GNOME2 alive in a fork. I believe only Linux Mint and ArchLinux are shipping it currently.

ethankcvds:
The part that I miss about gnome 2 is how they have the applications, places, and the system related settings separated. I guess I'll have to check those two distros out.

I'm perfectly happy with KDE on OpenSuse :P
