AngelinaBelle:
This is a pretty good guide for first-time posters.
It seems to cover most of what is in http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=228939.0, and most of what is in And it is linked from http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=91351.0
As well as http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/How_do_I_ask_support_questions_the_smart_way
Here's what I think.
* We look through those other two "how to help us help you" posts, check if there is anything useful missing from this new one.
* Use this new one instead of the old "READ ME: How to help us help you" post.
* Also use this new one in place of the "How do I ask support questions the smart way" article on the wiki.
* Finally -- figure out if we need to make this more prominent on the wiki's Main Page.
How does that sound?

They're different things, though. One's kinda "How to get good support", whilst the other's more a kinda general "How you ought to behave" thing. Although, of course, there's no reason why the one couldn't be expanded to accommodate the other, of course. :)

Step 1: Search the documentation.
Step 2: Check the FAQs.
Step 3: Browse the Documentation.
Step 4: Still can't find it? Read about forum etiquette and how the forum, here, works.
Step 5: Ask at the community forum.
Would that work?
AngelinaBelle:
Step 4 -- that's a good place for it.
Well -- what do you think? Separate "support etiquette" and "how to ask a question" posts, or combined?
Already, your post combines some of both -- "here is the information we need to help you" could be seen as purely technical, though, of course, making life easier on those you are asking to help you is also courteous.
What do you think will help Support Team the most, improve efficiency, keep topics friendly and courteous, improve how we appear to the community, all that sort of thing?
