Can not build custom search index

I have a big forum where searching is extremly slow / makes the whole forum go down.
So I have been adviced to build a custom search index. When trying, I get a 500 error after 20 minutes or so. I also goes very slow. If I continue building the search index every time it stops, it builds about 1% / day.

How can I fix this?

Are you using sphinx? If not, go install it! :)

Note that this requires you to have admin permissions on the server. Shared hosting will not work.
